This is exemplified in the city’s transit centers, which exist as isolated objects disconnected from their contexts, resolving as a single shed or vault form—providing a base level of flimsy shade at the bus lanes, but otherwise detached from the streets and buildings nearby. There is immense potential in adjacent spaces to formally integrate these centers into the city fabric. A reimagined transit center would embody a cool rock, opening up its envelope and becoming a porous yet dense provider of shade. Houston’s transit infrastructure would expand to become a social infrastructure too, open all hours, forming a new archipelago of mobility and public-oriented shade. Transit centers rest in the urban fabric as islands that demand further attention that in their current state discourage transit use and fosters hierarchies of social inequity in terms of who can access shade. With a surplus of transit passing through downtown, centers that are scattered further away are intended to address transit gaps, yet more often than not exist as isolated objects, disconnected from their contexts. The effect of this on the user is tangible, and detrimental to their journey on and off a transit vehicle. Looking at three transit centers as case studies—Fifth Ward TC, Bellaire TC, and Burnett TC—one notices how the transit center typology typically resolves as a single shed or vault form, providing a base level of shade at the bus lanes, but otherwise detached from the streets and buildings nearby. Hand in hand with designing for transit is a need to evaluate shade and the experience of waiting for travel. Shelters and coverings are rarely considered a truly public infrastructure, and their presence often fosters hierarchies of social inequity in terms of who can access shade. There are inequalities in where people can find public shade in Houston; only 24% of METRO’s bus stops are shaded. Furthermore, the city treats shade as limited to the enclosure of a building, bound to structure footprints. In focusing on reinventing the Burnett TC, the production of deliberate and varied expressions of shade by playing with systems of building shells and vaults close to the ground draws attention to the binary of being exposed to the sun or not; in the name of understanding coverings as a necessity, one reframe a new relationship with the exterior, where not everything has to be inside, and the Care appears in innumerable ways, far beyond the context of medical practice. It is ingrained in the very foundation of housing, and deeply predicated on contexts of proximity, visibility, temporality, and empathy. Addressing care spatially not only means acknowledging the various specificities of those who would occupy the space, but also producing a space that is worth caring for.This housing proposal is in many ways a rejection of the uncomfortable, corporate aesthetic of the Texas Medical Center. Instead, a low-rise, high density neighborhood of housing clusters covers the site organizing units on a principle of overlap and sharing. Four broad programs of living intersect with levels of privacy to produce new modes of living: rest, leisure, domestic labor, and a flexible outdoor space. Each cluster does not compromise on a good quality of living; it asserts that models of co-living and housing are not mutually exclusive from feelings of personal ownership, from having light or spacious rooms. Nine cluster types varying in their levels of sharing are scattered across the site within a grid of paths. Four public centers of care occupy the same grid and are each paired with a large open plaza. These community buildings consist of activities of self-care, family care, wellness care, and social care.Large pitched roofs with wide overhangs top each cluster and public building, unifying the site and producing a system of covered pedestrian paths. The paths are interrupted by a system of courtyards produced by cuts into the clusters and demarcated by low walls and vivid blue tiles. These same tiles line the care buildings and signal public space.Housing is not synonymous with a paralyzing bigness. At the core of the project is a desire to delineate smaller localized communities of a few units within each cluster, focusing on the unique relationship each unit has with those surrounding it. The result is a more nuanced understanding of ownership and responsibility that ultimately form a tighter communal bond. <img width="720" height="720" width_o="720" height_o="720" The result is a series of discrete blocks unified by a grid of the “old” city fabric: a series of brick walls that materially and proportionally call to the older buildings and informal housing that once stood before. Attempting to counter the wide roads and lack of spaces for close social interaction, this grid of walls pushes people together and invites the residents to explore a range of different programs and activities, all centered around a museum at the center focused on Vallekan arts and culture. This studio centered around the exploration of a particular building technology in the context of a boathouse design located by Buffalo Bayou in Houston, TX. Building on Eladio Dieste’s Cristo Obrero Church in Atlantida, Uruguay as a case study, our project concerned the use of brick and masonry to create large-scale vaults, attempting to evaluate our technology through simultaneous lenses of geometry, material, and structure (ultimately culminating in a “synthesis” that encapsulates all three). Dieste’s project involved understanding the compressive nature of the brick when applied to particular geometric shapes: his intersection of a sinusoidal curve with catenaries produced what he termed “gaussian vaults,” a structure whose gravitational and compressive loads he was then able to resolve with freestanding, ondulating walls. The result is an expressive form of masonry, where internal walls are kept separated from the main roofs and walls, leading to incredibly nuanced uses of light and structure. In a similar vein, our project attempts to expand upon catenary geometries, creating vaults out of a series of inverted catenary curves revolving around semi-circular footprints. The result blends the reading of individual programmable units with overarching shells that connect two to three blocks at a time, all while operating under the compressive logic of brick stacking, and creating varied readings of the masonry both on the interior and exterior. These shells and unit combinations also begin to allow for flexibility in combining and organizing program – both formally and in each unit’s interrelationship with the others – allowing for clusters The notion of autonomy in architecture has historically encompassed various issues of so-called “liberated” design: it may refer to pushing against the overlap that the field has with socio-economic and political positions; perhaps it refers to the critical objectivity that architecture should be approached with. Yet reading the term on a more literal level – freedom of certain formal parts at various levels of locality and isolation – begins to illustrate how differing systems operate and interact with each other. In a project such as this, the brief of a multi-housing dormitory already sets itself up to engage various design principles in conflict – the programmatic battle of public versus private, the formal clash of aggregation versus subtraction, and the pragmatic mediation between repetition and a desire for the unique. This project, a housing block for graduate students at Rice University, articulates these struggles for a formal autonomy through its design foundation. Beginning with a floor template of units assembled in a grid, a new system of blocks and subtractions to the grid is introduced: these voids act with autonomy, forcing the ordering and appearance of units at various points around the building, and shaping how groups of units vary contextually from floor to floor. The result is the fragmented appearance of a singular formal template, spread from floor to floor and yet different. Programmatically, it reflects a new understanding of the desires of graduate housing: one that acknowledges a desire for a unique space to live – or more fittingly, a desire to not notice the unit repetition that college housing usually entails. It creates unique contexts to each room based on how units beside and around have reacted to the subtractions, and the units’ aggregated-like quality begin to set units together in an almost urban fashion. In short, playing with formal autonomy and bending unit contexts around the building is done to reduce the typically institutional viewing of school buildings. <img width="7200" height="7201" Of the many underlying concepts that drive the exploration of architectural design, none are perhaps as prolific and yet as undefined as the elusive relationship between solid and void. Essentially left undefined and to the interpretation of the architect who wields them, the concept has grown to become universally accepted in a “we-know-what-it-means-but-we-can’t-exactly-describe-it” way. Are the two terms synonymous with ‘nothing’ and ‘something’, and if so, which is which? Does it have to do with program and whether something is happening or not? Or are they one and the same, save only for when the architect intervenes and forms one out of the other? There is no clear answer to these questions, yet the void’s importance to architectural discourse cannot be understated. This project does not set out to fully redefine what solids and voids are, other than to acknowledge them as workable spaces. Indeed, there is merit to deliberately keeping the two words and their relationship vague, and open to interpretation. However, in an attempt to further delve into what this unique relationship can create architecturally, this project examines several pre-suppositions and qualities of the void, questioning the design The house has long been based in underlying assumptions of privacy and publicity, and of spaces that reflect the two in some way. While innately a social and subjective construct, structures are built with intended formal and qualitative associations of being either private or public, to the point where rooms can easily be “read” as either. This project seeks to break down these conventions or associations and challenge the way that rooms can interact and merge with each other, physically or otherwise. By closely analyzing connections of publicity with circulation, visibility, and connectivity, these criteria are experimented with in an attempt to ambiguate the space, creating a house that ties explicit expressions of closed-off spaces with open-to-interpret spaces of free program, a domestic vagueness.. More specifically, staircases that wrap around the house and emphasize its form create movement across the house, while windows create connections that force a dialogue between each room. <img
