Boathouse, Bricked

 

In a studio exploring material building techniques in the context of a boathouse design located by Buffalo Bayou, this project evaluates brick and masonry construction through simultaneous lenses of geometry, material, and structure to construct large-scale vaults. Based on a system of catenary geometries, the project generates these vaults out of a series of inverted catenary curves revolving around semi-circular footprints. The resulting form blends the reading of individual programmable units with overarching shells that connect two to three blocks at a time, all while operating under the compressive logic of brick stacking, and creating varied readings of the masonry on both the interior and exterior.
